It is possible the smoke alarm had been hard wired. I live in an apartment complex and the maintenance folks recently changed the detectors to be hard wired. Hard wired connects to the same wire the lights do. Once hard wired no batteries are needed. If batteries are still needed the outer cover should easily just twist off. If not one or two screws need to be unscrewed. Do not force anything. good luck

Change the battery in your key fob, then reset by the system by locking then unlocking your doors, then alarming and disarming the alarm. Worked for 3 hours before someone suggested it could be as simple as that the dead battery signaled trouble and caused the alarm to sound. Mary
It would be ok. I would just worry about them being stolen. Maybe you can have one in the camper with you and one in your car with the windows cracked?
