Question:

What is wrong with my brakes?

rear drum brakes, i replaced the shoes and put it all back together the same way with new rotorsnow my brakes barely work! what did i do wrong

Answer:

perhaps your brake system needs to be power bled there is probably some air in your systemsince you mention they were rear drum brakes the rear drum type would have a visible adjuster in which you can physically adjust the shoe clearance to bring them closer to the drumif you have replaced the rotors which are not drum type brakes.in any case with rear disc type brakesgo to a place where you have no safety issues and plenty of roomput your car in reversegive it gas.go fairly fast and apply the brakes firmlythis should assist your newly installed brake pads automatically adjust. if that does not do the trick.the brake calipers may have a leak and would need to be rebuilt.some people have the brain capacity to do this themselves if they order the caliper kit from an auto parts storeotherwise have a competant mechanic rebuild them for you.best of luck and I hope this was helpful
Did you adjust the brakes up to where they barely rub the drum? Jack the rear axle of the ground and put on jeack stands. There is a oval rubber plug on the bottom of the backing plate. Take that plug out and use a short straight screwdriver. There is an adjuster in the brake assembly to set the brakes. Adjust them til they just start to rub the drum as you turn the wheel. You will bw able to feel or hear this. Put the plug back in and then do the other side. It makes a world of difference.
If you put it back together properly, did you pump the brakes? When you back up and apply the brakes, it will set them properly with the star wheel. Did you use brake cleaner/get any grease on the pads or drums? The rear brakes only do a small percentage of the stopping, the front brakes are about 70%. Does your brake fluid resevoir have enough fluid? Is there a leak in your system? Last, but not least, did you lock up your brake proportioning valve?
