Question:

what size of copper pipe should i run to a 30,000 btu ventfree heater? i need to go about 45 feet.?

is there a cheaper alternative to copper pipe i could use?

Answer:

stick with copper, you won't regret it, check with the manufacture for pipe specs,
go with bricky, 1/2 black pipe. in most cases, it not to code to run copper for nat. gas. use a good pipe dope on all fittings and strap it up securely, then use a flex line to attach to the unit and don't forget a gas cock shut-off valve at the unit.
if this is a gas line i would use 1/2 in black pipe.
