Question:

What type of insulation can be used w/Foil Paper?

I just bought my 1st house, and I was recently in the crawlspace under the kitchen and discovered that there is NO insulation under the subfloor! There is merely foil type paperThis would explain why my kitchen floor is always so cold as of recent, as the only thing between my floor and the naked cold earth is foil paperWTH!? How did this pass code?I want to insulate the subfloor, but I wanted to know what is the best type to use with the foil paper that is already there, as I don't want to promote moister or moldOf course I will add a vapor barrier once the insulation is complete. Thanks in advance!

I have had some gutters and a downspout replacedThe new ones are glossy white and made of aluminumWhat do I use to paint them with the same latex house paint I used for my house exteriorSpecifically, do I need some kind of undercoat or primer prior to the finish coat?
If you're insulating your house, you typically start at the top (most heat loss) and work your way down (walls) to the lower crawlspaceThe major heat loss there is probably radiant (warm floor radiating heat into the cold area beneath the home), although there is probably some convective heat loss as wellIf you decide to insulate, you need to know that the vapor barrier of insulation ONLY goes on the warm side, where moist water vapor isOtherwise, the vapor will travel through the insulation to the point where it meets the temperature for condensing into liquid (the dew point) and condense into liquid or frozen waterHaving constantly moist insulation results in mold and other major problems (rot, insects, smell)The R-value recommended for the crawlspace of your home can be determined from various online guidelines of government agencies like EPA and standards like IBC.

Don't use latex paint on aluminum surfaceThe is an oil base paint you can but that's made to paint over aluminum gutters and downspoutsMost likely you won't need to use a primer unless there is rustAs a house painter for many years this is the right way to do it.
