It has been proven that lightning rods are useless. It would take a rod and wire as thick as 1 foot to handle the power of a lightning strike. Even then, damage can happen.
Honestly I can drive my prius in the mountains of Colorado in the snow. It sounds like you want to live around Evergreen its not that high up. I just bought cables for my prius just in case but ive never had to use them in the five years ive owned it. I put snowtires on it and that does the trick, I'm able to take it snowboarding and even on crazy mountain dirt roads in the snow. The only reason I would think that you would need a 4 wheel drive crv type car is if you lived on an un plowed or dirt or super steep road.The highway from the mountains to Denver is not very steep and its all paved and they plow it super well. I would just be prepared to get snowtires for at least one car (they are like $500 total).And if you are worried about ice there are studded tires but they are super loud but they are a bit cheaper and grip the road better in ice. Now all this being said I learned to drive in the mountains on dirt roads and in the snow, its a little intimidating having to commute in it the first few times so if you would feel safer in a crv like car get one :) I would try just driving yours with snow tires and if you hate it get a new car :)
