Interesting. Two problems though. If the plasma discharge from a shuttle attracted lightning, then why did it take over 100 shuttle missions for an occurance, especially if a T-Storm is not a necessary component? Two: Why aren't airliners, the SST and high flying military aircraft brought down, even when they are hit by lightning? The shuttle had no fuel to ignite. The plasma trail follows the spacecraft, so a lighting strike attracted to it would not have caused the leading edge damage that caused the burn-through. Still an interesting theory though.
