Question:

why can't pvc plumbing pipe be used underground for data cables?

data and low voltage cables. i was told that i had to use 2 inch pvc sch 80 conduit. i don't see the difference between the 2 if its just low voltage. this is in a 3' trench. no concrete above.

Answer:

I used it to run 120v to my garage, but i didn't run it that deep.Never have had any problems, however i live in a small town where the codes are not as strict.
Because it is not UL listed for that purpose.
I believe they were thinking you or someone else might dig into it and get shocked, but if your putting it three feet deep down I don't think anyone will come close to it! Unless the run a farm plow over it, and then it still won't come close!
You can use pvc plumbing pipe. The cable will be burried a suitable depth and will be mechanically protected by the pipe.
You can use the pvc with no problems. Just make sure not to over do it with the pcv cement. If you got a big glob of it inside that does not set up, it will glue your cables to the inside of the pipe while your pulling them through.
