Question:

Why do my interior auto lights flicker?

I've noticed the last week that my interior display lights for my dash, radio, and overhead temp control keep flickering periodically while I'm driving. Not sure what could be the cause?

Answer:

Weak alternator. Have the voltage checked to see if it's putting out what it should be.
Could be the alternator starting to go out, or a simple fix like a ground wire that needs cleaning!
I have a 1999 Subaru legacy Outback and my interior and dash lights flicker most of the time while I'm driving...any ideas as to what may cause this? Thank you in advance.
Oh geese. Yeah back in the day Model T's actually did do that but foe a different reason.. Sir: you probably have a bad center diode in your alternator. There is also the possibility (although a bit less likely) that the capacitor used to root mean average the voltage limiting level inside the voltage regulator has blown. So you have one of two things. Replace the 'triode set' inside the alternator about 8-12 bucks or replace the alternator. 89 - 229+ or replace the voltage regulator. about 50 dollars Note that some regulators are intrigal in the alternator. Since you gave no vehicle description, I cant tell you what you have, or which is most likely to be bad. Either way, most repair facilities will test your system for you and give a pretty accurate diagnosis.. they wont say diodes though They will just say alternator. If you get it checked at Kragen for free, you wont be pressured to get the work done there since its not a repair facility. probably just a diode. It wont hurt anything but your vehicle will not put out as much electrical current while idleing compared to when the diode is good. This could eventually lead to battery failure prematurely if capacities are being barely met.
different cars have different problems. is it a model T ford or a rolls royce?
