Question:

Anti Lock Brake Systems?

I recently purchased a 94 Windstar (14000kms) and the ABS light is comeing on. There is a noise comeing from the brakes when I use them. Any idea of the cost/repairs required? Thanks in advance. Bertram

Answer:

If it grinds when stopping, then park it and replace the brakes immediately. If it's squealing, then it's either a build up of brake dust, and needs to be cleaned out with brake clean, or the wear sensors are scraping the rotors and you need to replace the pads.
abs is antilock brake system, them system is controlled and monitored by a computer module, if the module detects a problem in any of the abs components it will shut the abs off and turn the light on, the noise may be due to worn brakes (usually a squeak or grinding noise) or possibly the abs kicking on when braking (a rapid vibration/buzz type noise) you should have you brake system inspected
timethrift, I got your e-mail, but your return address is no good, so I couldn't respond. Check your "My Account" settings to make sure you can receive e-mails. As far as your ABS is concerned, The first thing you need to do is find out what the fault code is that is turning on the ABS light. There are a host of reasons why the light could be on. If you have an AutoZone nearby, they will scan it for free. As others have stated, the noise you hear when braking could be the brake pads are gone and you're getting "metal-to-metal" braking. If this is the case, you could have a lot of metallic debris built up on a wheel speed sensor, causing an intermittent signal from that sensor, which could turn your ABS light on. The noise could also be the ABS pump activating, due to the fault in your ABS system. If one of the wheel speed sensors' signal is missing, the ABS module "thinks" that wheel is locked up, and will activate the ABS system when the brakes are applied. That's about all the info I can give you without knowing the fault code, and you having a 4 wheel brake check to make sure that your Base brake system is OK. HTH!! Good Luck!!
