I am wanting to add as much power to my 1990 v6 camaro as possible WITHOUT going to a v8. I was wondering what would be the best exhaust system for me to get, that would still be quiet, because I love stealth. Where would be a good place to get it from, will I need both the muffler and headers, and would I be able to have it customized with a different exhaust tips welded on?
I wouldn't get too carried away with headers and everything unless you really like this car and plan to mod it further. Anyways, I think headers might be a bit of overkill for a near stock 3.1 V6. I'd go with a cat-back dual exhaust system with some noise reducing turbo mufflers if you prefer it to be quiet. That wouldn't cost you too much and you'll pick up some extra ponies. I'm surprised you don't want it to have a more prominent sound with a new exhaust system. If you want more power, also look into a cold air intake and a high voltage ignition system. A centrifugal supercharger would give your V6 lots of additional power and torque.
you won't be adding much power with just a new muffler setup. Look into headers and a whole exhaust system with a high flow cat. Good intake system, cams, msd ignition for better spark, etc. Is this carburated? if so you can get an aftermarket carburetor and gain a few ponnies. But to be honest with you, you won't be able to get much power out of this engine.
A performance exhaust will add somewhere between 6 to 25 horsepower for your V6 Camaro. I would get a Flow-master system. They have a lower resonation from my experience than other comparable brands. As far as headers go, a quality upgrade will ensure you the best precision in it's build, and promise a slight raise in performance (most likely unnoticeable though). Welding is always best, but bolt on products are just fine nowadays. My number one suggestion overall though, is to make sure you keep the same size pipe from the cat back, as you have now. Car manufacturers use the size exhaust they do for good reason. Your motor functions off of a certain balance of front and back pressure, and by going too big with the exhaust pipe on a smaller motor can cause all kinds of headaches. idling issues, stalling, and most certainly a loss of power (which is the opposite of what you want in the first place). So find a nice performance shop, or even the Chevy dealer (although it will cost you a pretty penny), and ask to see what they have. You also have the option to buy online, and take it down to Midas, RNS, Strauss Auto, or Pep Boys. But then if something is wrong you'll have to deal with the shipping. Good Luck!
would have to agree with a bigger cylinder. they make air lifts, and i have one of the portable ones. with its 6 inch cylinder it will pick up 6000 lbs 165 psi
