Just ask about the fire drills and if you can pull the alarm next time they have a fire drill. The principal should recongnize this as an opportunity to satisfy your curiosity and avoid a spontaneous fire drill. Listen here though once you ask this, you cant pull it just for the heck of it if they say no you'll have to wait and wait and wait until they forgot you asked about it because you will be the first suspect.

Smoke detectors come it two types, ion and photo. Ion types operate by trying to pass static electricity through the air. Particles in the air allow the static to travel between two points. The sensor cannot tell what is allowing the current to flow, only that it is flowing. Photo work oppositely, they pass light between two point, it the light becomes obstructed it goes into alarm. Neither of these types can tell the difference between smoke, dust, or steam, but of these three steam has the least effect.
