2 wheel drive really means, only one rear wheel is pulling. 4 wheel drive, at least one front wheel and one rear wheel are pulling for better traction
2 wheel drive has power to the rear wheels only. 4 wheel drive has power to the rear wheels and you can engage the front wheels also. 4 wheel drive creates more traction, improved climbing ability and pulling power.
