i am interested in purchasing a cold air intake for my new camaro. Is it better to get an air filter or an oil filter? What sort of cleaning is required? Thanks for the advice!!
I agree you are able to drive without it, don't for very long, because you'll get sand and stuff inside your engine.
if you run without the air filter it will get dirt in the throttle body/carb and will get inside you engine and do alot of damage
It doesnt really make a difference as far as the performance, I have used both on my cold air system the only difference is that the oil filter type or KN will get dirtier a lot faster and require more frequent cleaning. As for performance you cant tell the difference between the two. I have had both types on my Avalanche and my Porsche and I noticed no difference on either vehicle. Except the need to clean the oil type a lot more often.
Don't get fooled by K N's high flow air filter. remember a true cold air intake has the air filter located outside the engine bay. thus bringing in cooler air from the outside instead of hot air from the engine bay. a lot of vendors sell high flow air intakes as cold air intakes like K N and add a baffle plate that you mount inside the engine bay.what a joke. I have a true cold air with my air filter located inside my body fender near front end of car. they come with a bypass valve incase of water, that way it wont suck water into the engine. check out AEM before you go with K N, and also check out a forum online for you car model and see what others use on there car that is the same as yours cold air intakes do not void any of your warrantyexcept for the mass air flow sensor if you buy a cheap CAI that requires you to modify and relocate the sensor, then sometimes if damaged from the oil you put on the filter it can get on the sensorbut if you buy a good quality CAI this wont happen. good luck
