Question:

Copper residue problem.?

Ok, I used a copper brush to clean my AR bolt. And when I did, the bolt changed copper-colored everywhere the brush touched. Now, a month later, I get te impression that the thing looks like rust. I did the old "wipe down the surface with a copper solvent soaked cloth" thing (which turns copper blue/green and rust red...) and I got light black coating on the cloth instead of red or green. After like 2 more patches, the cloth came out perfectly clean but the bolts color didn't change.-- almost. It kinda had a bluish tinge to it but it was negligible... Help?

Answer:

Try a stainless steel tooth brush and some Shooters Choice or Hoppes and see if that takes it off. The problem is the copper wire is softer than the steel in the bolt so instead of cleaning the bolt you actually deposited copper on the metal. One other option is to use Sweet 7.62 and a nylon brush but I would caution you. You must have the time to do it correctly and you cant really leave once you start because if you leave this stuff on the metal to long it will actually etch the surface. After you apply some, scrub it a with a nylon brush and let it sit for few minutes, you have to remove it then use solvent or oil to neutralize he remnants. And throw those copper brushes away.
