for me i look at the group the element in group 1a have 1+, have 2a have 2+,3a have 3+, 4a have 4+, 5a have 3-, 6a have 2- and last 7a have 1- (1s2)(2s2)(2p6)(3s2) is Mg in group 2a so it 2+ Al is in group 3a is 3+, F is in group 7a is 1- I just remember 1+,2+,3+,4+ then 3-,2-,1- hope this help
