Question:

could a motorcycle fly IF it had wings and had a jet engine built into it?

Was watching a old 80s sci-fi/action movie and thought I‘d ask for fun IF want they did in the movie(build retrackable wings into the bike‘s body and a jet engine into the frame) could work in real life? Think I already know the answer(no way!) but wouldn‘t hurt to ask just for fun.If I am wrong how big are the wings and jet on that sucker? this I‘ve got to see that is IF I‘m wrong.

Answer:

w/ enough money and a group of engineers yes its possible. The main reason personal aircraft haven't become popular is the number of buildings that would be hit every day by bad pilots. Look at our roads in any country in the world, do you really want to give these drivers incredible machines.
First I'm going to answer your subject line. could a motorcycle fly if it had wings and had a jet engine built into it? The answering is a resounding no because if you added those things it would cease being a motorcycle and become a jet. Body of the question: Probably not, I'm not a physicist but I think retractable wings would not be sturdy enough to sustain flight.
Ultra light plane kits have been adapted to motorbikes - in a couple cases bicycles and flown. The human powered flight prize was won in England about 2001 with bicycle/ultralight basic design. A small jet engine like the French 250 pound thrust design used as basis for boosters and small heliocopter has been put on a 'scooter' that makes drag strip runs and when doing wheelies has left ground. Your retractable wings? - the script writers are often not technical wizards. A simple fixed parasol wing with a tail section on a motorcycle with a second drive chain to propellor was featured a couple years back- the advantage was the motorcycle back tire drove craft to takeoff speed faster than using just propeler thrust. I think the wing/tail design came from a 2 seat Pantera kit, motorcycle was early Yamaha 250 with training wheels and jackshaft for dual chainsYou want jet engine? maybe small Bell Jetranger engine with afterburn driving wheel and providing thrust- bring lots of $$.
