In my apartment, there is this ancient heating system which comes from the gas stove.I'm forever having these pounding headaches.
Sheesh, these guys must be bringing their wood stove camping with them. Pine is good for a fast, hot, short lived fire. It is good in damp conditions, great for kindling and to get other woods started. It is aromatic and relatively low smoke. Oak,elm, hickory and other hard woods are good for long lasting fires with lower flames and hot coals for cooking, etc. Elm is a high smoke wood. Hickory is a good wood for cooking over if you want smoky flavored food.
Ok - I thought a lightning rod was me running fast on a good day:)
I will second Oak as being the best, Hardwoods like it burn hot and slow with less smoke and make for great cooking fires. You can't always be picky when you don't bring your own and what's for sale locally is usually always some type of pine. I never bring my own and buy locally to support the local business and the camp host so I make do. I prefer not to cook over pine as it's too sooty and I don't like the flavor it leaves. Others I like are apple, hickory and maple these are also hard woods and leave a great flavor to the meats specially if your doing some smoking, I will bring these as wood chips to throw on a BBQ
