Truck has a broken front right axle and I was curious as to how much it would cost to repair. I was apps wondering if I could do it myself so I‘d like to know what would need to be done.
Depends on you. I have ridden a motorcycle, big ones, fast ones, for years. Maybe I can remember 2 or 3 shaky incidents, no accidents,no dropping bike. However,I get at least 3 per year in the car, near accidents, deer 1 per 2-3 year avg.,icy road slides one a year at least. Also at least 5 times my car with me in it has been hit by another auto. So if you are careful go for it.(yeah I started on a dirt bike, and thats a given on trails you will dump it on ocassion)
From a NHTSA report, per mile traveled in 1998, a motorcyclist is approximately 16 times more likely to die in a crash than an automobile occupant and 3 times as likely to be injured. I had several friends who were expert riders with years of experience who were involved in accidents doing nothing wrong. Bikes are hard to see. Other drivers didn't see them, failed to yield the right of way, or simply ignored stoplights and signs. The biker never wins in a collision with a car. They spent days in the hospital and months recuperating from what might have been a minor fender bender. Riding at night it's sometimes hard to see damaged or uneven pavement that can cause a spill. Wind gusts are also a problem.
It would be a spindle on a C-10. You would just need the knuckle. You should be able to find a good used one for pretty cheap. You just have to dink with the brake line and then about 1/2 of a ball joint and 1/4 of a tie rod replacement and you should be good to go. My son sold the complete front end out of a 1 ton including the frames and all for $150.
A 1985 Chevrolet C-10 doesn't have a FRONT axle. A C-10 is a 2-wheel drive truck with independent front suspension. It has spindles, NOT axles. You can buy a PAIR of front spindles from several sources on the Internet for less than $300. Of course, labor to install them is not included in that price, and if you can't tell the difference between a spindle and an axle, I don't suggest you try doing this yourself.
Quote: I have almost been killed in both. IMO -- Motorcycles are *safer* than cars. Motorcycles are smaller, quicker, have no blind spots, can avoid hazards that will trap cars. A motorcycle has lesser chance of being in a collision. A car is called a cage. Even a pitiful car is still has a steel safety cage. Statistically, 50% of collisions are involved with *NO* injuries. On a motorcycle, a collision is just about a sure bet that you will be hurt, a matter question about how bad. Since you have been hit, twice, odds are that you will be hit on a motorcycle and will be hurt. You are young and will mend.
