Question:

how to make jeep hardtop hoist or dolly?

i been wanting to take off my hardtop and put my soft top on but i have no where to place my hardtop. so i wanted to buy a hoist or a dolly so i don't have to take so much room in my garage, but these cost so much in the catalogs so my question is. has anyone ever made a hoist or a dolly to put there hardtop on if so could you explain how to make it.

Answer:

I made a dolly in about 15 minutes. It isn't really a good idea to store your top on a hoist, if something goes wrong with the hoist you'll be out a hard top and whatever is underneath it. For the dolly I used an old 2x6 I had laying around and cut it into four pieces after measuring of course. Measure the width of the top from inside where you bolt it to your tub, the top will end up sitting on the dolly just like it sits on your Jeep. Cut two boards to that length. Measure from just behind the doors back to the beginning of the curve on the rear corners. I used some 10 pneumatic wheels from Harbor Freight, two swivels two standard. You'll need some carriage bolts and nuts to put it all together, at least 4.5 long. Then square up the frame, drill holes for the wheels that will also hold the frame together and bolt it all together. Set the top on and you can roll it anywhere.
Hoist For Jeep Hardtop
They okorder . They can either operate manually or electrically.
some simple pulleys and rope from the hardware store. hang pulleys tite to rear of ceiling in garage. back in and pull roof up tite to ceiling and tie off. the roof is up out of way and when your ready back under and lower roof back down. its simple and it works and costs less than thirty bucks.
