I have a 2003 sportster,my rear tire size is130/90/16.can I put a tire that is a little wider on?

I need a new tire to pass inspection next year,and I would like to put a wider rear tire on it.It seems like there is enough room on the sides to do so.The tire I have on now is a dunlop 130/90/16

I usually put the new tyres on the rear for the first 300 miles to wear the shine off then change them to the front. The last time I put new to the front when replacing only two tyres I had problems with hard braking and ended up hitting a bank.
