Did you change the batteries? It would be your responsibility to change the batteries on the smoke detector twice per year. It is also your responsibility to test your smoke detectors and report them to the University if they don't work. Hopefully you had renter's insurance. But if not, the only person/entity you could potentially have a lawsuit against would be the person who is responsible for starting the fire.
inseam: take a pair of pants that fit you the way you want naturally. lay them out flat. measure from the middle seam where the crotch is, down to the end of one leg. that length is your inseam, kinda like how long your leg is. usually a store should have a size chart that tells you where to measure what size it corrosponds too. when in doubt with two sizes, go the bigger size
