My furnace is not blowing air. The hot air quot;tricklesquot; out of the vents. Furnace repairman said it is due to clogged heat exchanger (Replace for $1000.00-no warranty- or buy new furnace). When he disconnected the outside air intake pvc pipe from furnace, the gas lit up and furnace now runs. He indicated this is a temporary fix (bringing more air into system). My questions: Is it safe? Is the heat exhanger the problem? What do you think is the problem and most reasonably priced solution? Thanks
My advise to you is call a different company out. Thats a load of horse c r a p! Your intake vent is blocked and simply needs cleaned. I seriously doubt there is anything wrong with the heat exchanger. Clear the pipe out and reattach it and you should be fine. The guy is taking you on a ride of take your money !
The heat exchanger is not the problem. If it works with the pipe disconnected, the pipe is clogged. Drop a golf ball into the disconnected pipe and it should roll through to the basement. If it is clogged, you could do a few things such as: use a plumbers snake to clean out the clog, or you could cut the PVC pipes, take them outside and flush them out. You can then glue them back together using couplings. You might want to check the web for your particular furnace to see if the pipe is large enough and if it has the proper end points. Some furnaces can use pipes that go straight out while others require the pipes to have specific curves.
