I found a ref book in the library on making locksquite detailed : I photocopied everything except the book title. :-( I think the Foxfire 5 book has something on locks, but I think they cover Siler lock makers.
Honestly, I have always loved the natural color of wood, I wouldn't stain it at all, I would just apply urethane and leave it at that. At the most I would go with a light color. From my experience in renting homes, the darker color woods were typically in the older homes that I rented. So, with that I wouldn't necessarily go with a dark color stain, it gives it that antique, worn look. Hope it works out for you either way.
