Question:

MK4 Jetta Exhaust Problem?

I just bought a 2000 mk4 VW Jetta and the only thing wrong with it is the guy said the exhaust needs to be tilted up (it makes a rattly/grinding sound when accelerating) what exactly does he mean by that??

Answer:

The exhaust system is a tight fit on the cars. It is routed in such a way that the pipes are very close to hitting different parts under the car even when everything is installed properly. If you have the car on a lift or securely on jack stands you can get underneath and have a look. Most likely one of the exhaust hangers or pipes needs to be tweaked to centre the pipe in the exhaust tunnel. Most often the pipe will be hitting the heat shield or the rear trailing axle but can be adjusted to clear them.
