I've made a few afghans out of just basic cheap acrylic yarn, but now I'm looking to make my first sweaterIs investing in the really expensive yarn really worth it? Is there a real difference in the quality between basic wool yarn (like lion brand wool-ease) and the more expensive brands that you can only find online? Does anyone have a suggestion for where I can get good yarn at a decent price?

Since you are still fairly new to fiber, I would recommend making a first sweater out of something like Lion Brand. It's nice enough for a practice run, and not so expensive that you will kick yourself if the garment does not turn out the way you plannedThe quality difference between stuff you'd find at Michaels or JoAnn Etc and the specialty yarns at the local independently owned yarn store is immense, but don't let that scare youIf your heart is set on the Good Stuff, go for it! Check out your local yarn store, and tell them you are a newbie and ask what they would recommend for the pattern you have picked out. There is a lot of variation in fiber, in relation to material (silk, wool, alpaca, etc.), texture (dk, worsted, bulky, novelty, etc.) and price (I dropped that $35 skein like it was on fire last time I was in my LYS!), and it can be very daunting for a beginner.Honestly, just ask. They will help you find a pattern if you need one, and a suitable fiber for your projectHave fun! And welcome to one of the worst non-fatal addictions known to humankind! grin
