Question:

swaping 4 bolt to 5 bolt rear axle for Ford Fairmont/Zephr?

Rear axle housing I D‘s rear end as Fairmont or Zepher I guessing 1979. It has a 4 lug bolt pattern and I want a 5 lug bolt. What axles will interchange? Thanks Harv

Answer:

FWD results in over steer and torque steer at high horsepower levels. non issues with rear wheel drive.
bottom line.any. five bolts, most common ,vans and trucks. should be Ford
Here's the problem, you need to check to see which rear end you have. It could be a spicer 7.5 or 8.8 or the Ford 8 or 9. The 7.5/8.8 have a cover that bolts over the rear of the gear housing, the 8/9 the chunk comes out the front. I'm guessing you've got the 7.5/8.8 so you will need to find a suitable v-8 donor with the same axle type. Good luck.
Are you trying to put this in a Fairmont, or it just came out of a Fairmont? I am 99.5% sure that all of the Fairmonts and Zephyrs came with the 7.5 rear axle. I have not tried it, but if the Mustang is the same width (the 79-93 Mustangs were based off of the 78 Fairmont) then any aftermarket axle that would go in a Mustang housing should work. You need to verify if the Fairmont axles are the same width as the Mustang ones. If it is a 7.5, personally, I would try to find an 8.8 out of a Mustang and put the entire rear-end into your car. then upgrade to aftermarket five lug axles. Of course this is not a necessity unless you are running a high horsepower motor. Good luck!
