I‘m 22 and getting braces for the first time. I‘ve never had any problems with my teeth until my wisdom teeth came in sideways and caused some minor misalignment on bottom which also changed my bite. My problem is I‘m confused on which braces to get! I‘m a female college student and am pretty self-conscious about getting braces. I‘ve done some research and had a consultation so I get the pros and cons but it seems like people have mixed reviews about ceramic. I don‘t drink coffee or eat any staining foods and the cost isn‘t much difference with my insurance. I guess I‘m interested to hear personal experiences with them from people my age. Any advice or suggestions would be great!
I'll try to explain this best as possible. Metal Braces - not as cosmetically appealing, yes. Ceramic - Stain easily (which could give you the appearence of yellow teeth). When you get them taken off, some of your tooth enamel may go with it (this is not good!). Have you considered Invisaline? (chances are likely Insurance wont cover but it would be less of a traumatic experience). Also - when you go to the orthodontist, make it specific that they dont 'shape' your teeth (round them out with the high speed handpiece). This happened to me and I cannot whiten places where my enamal was drilled off so when I am older I will have funny lookin discolored teeth! haha.

not at all. but only if you have taking proper care of it. Tune ups, regular maintenance, etc.
I have ceramic braces on my top teeth, and the only problem i have is with staining. what happens is when you get ligaments for ceramic braces, you would probably get white. but what happens is over time, even if you don't eat staining foods, the ligaments turn a gross off white yellow color, and they make your teeth look yellow as well. then, i talked to my ortho, and he said there was another option. now, what they do is take a wire and wrap it around the bracket (this is different from chains though) and that replaces the ligament. the bracket itself won't stain, and as long as you take care of your teeth like normally, your teeth won't stain either. The other thing you should know, is most orthos will put metal braces on your bottom teeth whether you have ceramics on top or not. If you don't think they would look right mismatched, then I would just go with the metal ones. I know others have had problems with ceramic braces, but I think they are great. They are noticable, but barely compared to metal, and they are more sturdy than metal.
