Question:

Van is making loud noises from the exhaust system and smell inside car?

2002 Pontiac Montana was fine on the way to work, then when I start the car up to leave it sounds like the cars with bad mufflers do (really loud), and there is a strong smell inside the car. You can not really smell anything on the outside, and the muffler was perfectly fine (at least no noise). The muffler is still in place at the back, and we couldn‘t see under it because it was too dark. Any idea what it could be? It started after being parked all day.

Answer:

make helpful the muffler is truly point. If it is no longer you it may assemble water interior the low spots and get little loud steam explosions once you turn corners or permit off the gas and shrink exhaust tension.
If there was no damage done to your exhaust system when the vehicle was stopped, about the only explanation I can come up with is that someone may have stolen your catalytic converter. This is getting to be a big deal around the US these days since thieves can get around $50 each for used converters at recyclers.
one of the exhaust pipe segments may have come disconnected, or loose. This can happen all of a sudden from the time you park your car, until the next time you get in it. It can be caused from the cooling cycle of the exhaust system. It's usually the connection right after your exhaust manifold.
