Answer:

Don't know, but at least hurl the Sunbeam (generic Asian) battery in the trash. Even if new, it could easily already be expired from hanging in the store aisle for the last few years. In our store, we sell First Alert stuff - with Duracell or Energizer batteries. Start there.
There are a number of uses for a nipple shield. Sore nipples is not one of them. But a baby who is unable to latch at all, especially if exposed top bottle nipples, or who has trouble latching may benefit from using one. When starting to use a nipple shield so early, it is best to do some pumping as well, to protect the milk supply. usually this can be discontinued fairly soon. Studies have shown that the use of nipple shields does not cut down significantly on milk supply, and they can be used for a long period of time without ill effects. Often the baby can be weaned off the shield within a month to 6 weeks if the mother desires. If your baby is unable to breastfeed, or unable to breastfeed comfortably, the use of a nipple shield is far better than not using it. One would hope that your lactation consultant has read the literature on them (and there's not much, but there is some) and knows how to use them properly. In our hospital, only LCs are supposed to be able to dispense nipple shields.
nipple shields should only be used if feeding makes your nipples sore. if it doesnt then you dont need to use them.
