Question:

What do i do about water in braking system?

My teenage son informed me that he has no brakes in his 93 pontiac sunbird. When I checked it out I found that the pedal has no pressure and pushes to floor. I told my son that has leak in brake lines. My son in his infinite wisdom decided to fill the master cylinder with water to try and find the leak. Needles to say I was a little P.O‘d when he did this.My question is, will I be able to correct this, or is it better to simply replace entire braking system? I am thinking that everything to the calipers is going to be screwed because of this water.I am tempted to scrap the vehicle over it, it was a cheap $600 transportation special and I really don‘t want to invest hundreds to repair all of that.

Answer:

Holy Balls! uh, Well brake fluid is hygroscopic which is a bad thing. I recommend buying a whole bunch of brake fluid (a case) and have him sit there with you and bleed the brakes until you are though with a case of brake fluid. The water should eventually soak up in the brake fluid, hence being hygroscopic. Also by doing this, you will eventually find the leak that needs to be repaird. That is the cheapest backyard mechanic way of doing it.
Well you infinite wisdom child could now learn how to replace brake lines and front and rear brakes and the whole deal, if you scrap it you will have to buy him another junker, so spen the $200 to replace it and allow your son to understand and gain knowledge.
running some starter fluid (spray can) through the lines will clear them of any water and without leaving any residue and you'll be good to go adding water to the lines will only hurt the hydraulic systems by mixing with the brake fluid nothing more
