Question:

What is balancing tires?

When you go to get your tires replaced, is balancing them something they can only do with the tire on your car? Or if you just brought in a tire could they balance it?What exactly do they do when they balance your tires?

Answer:

ok balancing your tires are exactly what it says. it prevents damage on tires due to uneven. what they do is add weights to your tires to balance them out and you need to do it when you do tire rotations because tires go uneven over time.
Good answers from others. When you buy a tire, it goes on a certain rim. That rim has a unique signature. So when the tire goes on, it will run true only a certain way. By adding weights to it in strategic places, that tire matched with that rim will run true. That is what you want. So every time a tire is replaced on a rim, it must be balanced.
balancing tires is done off of the vehicle so yes you should be able to carry in a rim and tire and leave with it balanced and when you balance a tire it is done by putting weights on the rim so that the tire and rim weight the same all the way around and the wheel spins true with no vibration

Balancing tires is done with whatever method the shop has available which for some is on the car and some shops off the car. Both simply find heavy sides to a tire and wheel combination and they add weight to the other side. If you look into it you will find there are many ways a tire can be out of balance which each of them will cause a vibration or even hard shake at certain speeds. The best balance involves inboard and outboard weights but this is beyond the needs of most driving so most shops simply add weights to the back side so as not to show. Yes, all tires need to be balanced if they are to go above 20 mph
