You don't mention whether you work in an at-will state but if so, yes they can pretty much do what they want. if you have been switching hours and others have been covering for you then maybe you should consider talking to your doctor about putting you on an early LOA.

I would take that to mean you need to stop whining and getting people to switch with you and start working the hours you are scheduled. Or find a job that better suits the hours you prefer to work. Yes, they can do such a thing. If you are in an at will state and most are they can fire you for no reason at all.
If you're an at will employee, they can pretty much do whatever they want.
times like these be glad to even have hours. they'll probably fire you after you have your baby like they did to my wife. I would steal as many office supplies as I can before that happens.
