The college I tried out at (Universite du Quebec a Trois Rivieres) .. seem to remember we had a choice of wire cage or combo (half-shield/half-wire) but you absolutely had to wear one.
Honestly, Anyway, I'd suggest measuring yourself even if you don't get a custom order dress. That way, you know what size will fit you. Also, it's better to get something that's too big than too small. It's easier to make something smaller than to make it larger.
