Why soot blowing is required in boilers?

Soot blowing is done in boilers frequently, why that is done? Also why blow down being done in boilers?

Answer:

This work is done to remove soot layer settled over boiler's parts to improve its performance and so reduce the fuel consumption. And so more it's direction is down to can gather the soot in the cavity beneath the boiler and preventing its propagation in air.
