Question:

Windshield Wipers Wont Work?

My wind shield wipers are not moving at all! My back one is working just fine. I have checked the fuse and that is okay. Could it be the motor? If so, is there just one motor for both wipers or two motors? And does anyone know how much this would cost to get fixed?

Answer:

there are a number of possibilities in this situation. the fuse that goes to your rear windshield wiper made not necessarily be the same fuse in the circuit to your front windshield wipers. a second possibility is a bad windshield wiper relay that controls the front windshield wipers. also the switch controlling your front windshield wipers could be at fault. A remote possibility is that there is a problem in the wiring to your windshield wiper motor. another possibility is a bad windshield wiper motor. however you cannot rule out a bad motor until you have ruled out all other electrical possibilities. as you did not identify the make and model of your vehicle I will have to guess, but more than likely there is only 1 windshield wiper motor to the front wipers. they are connected by a series of linkages, which may have come disconnected in some way. it is common to be able to remove a narrow cover next to your hood that covers the wiper motors and linkage. That will give you better access to determine the problem. If you have, and can use a multi meter, look for voltage at the electrical connector that plugs into the motor. If you have the proper voltage, with the wipers turned on, the electrical system is in order. Considering this and if there is no clear problem with the linkage bars connecting the wiper arms to the motor, the motor itself is the likely culprit. a brand new motor maybe expensive. check around with junk yards in your area. there is a good possibility that the wiper motor for your vehicle is used on many different makes and models of cars and or trucks. it is very difficult to estimate the cost of this repair at a mechanic shop because labor rates vary widely from 1 area to another. I could have it fixed here in my hometown for 20 bucks plus the cost of parts. However, from what I read around here, labor rates are much higher elsewhere. I hope this information point you in the right direction. good luck.
There are 2 motors, one for the front and one for the back. It most likely is the motor. But without the ability to troubleshoot the problem correctly you may spend unnecessary cash. Motors are around $100.00 I believe, could be less. Then, if you do not know how to install it there would be a labor cost of about $120.00.
I'd agree with Jay that there could be a number of reasons that the front wipers do not work.and yes, it is a separate motor from the rear wiper. You can try to manually move the wiper arm with the wiper switch on.that may get the wipers moving if they are frozen to the windshield.scrape away any ice in the area which may cause the motor to bind. There is also a park switch which stops power to the motor when the wipers come to rest and that park switch could be badmoving the wipers manually may get it past a dead spot in the switch. If there is no ice or binding, can you hear the motor running at all with the switch on? if yes, it could be a linkage problem which became disconnected. if no, then it could be a bad wiper switch, bad wiper relay or bad motor or wiring issuewould need further testing for power and ground at the motor to see if it's getting power or not which will tell if it 's a bad motor or other issue.
