How about having one of this crank in one every room for using it only for light?
custom straight pipes. go to any custom welding/fabricating/exhaust shop and tell them what you want. they will do it and it will be cheaper than if you bought a prefabbed kit

Cranks definitely have their use. They complain a lot and call attention to problems, serving an important community function. Crank callers ensure that every phone line gets used once in a while. But in my experience cranks generate much more heat than light.
