I know nothing about cars, so I trusted the knowledge of a friend who told me where to pour transmission treatment fluid--which in fact turned out to be where brake fluid should go, not transmission fluid or treatment! I got a lot of it out with shop towels, but there is still some in there. This happened on Saturday when all the mechanic shops were closed. So I did not drive the car all weekend. I drove it about a mile this morning (trying to use the brake as little as possible) to a local mechanic who said that he could not flush it out. I then called another mechanic about 30 miles away who is going to flush it in the morning for $120 + tax. HOPEFULLY the fluid has not done its damage and the flush will fix it, but the damage may already be done and I may have to replace the whole braking system. My question is, approximately how much would this cost? Has anyone had this happen to them before? Thanks in advance.
My shop typically charges $99 for a complete brake system flush. As for causing damage, as long as it is completely flushed, you will be fine. The biggest thing that damages brake systems is water, and transmission fluid doesnt have any of that.
Brake System Replacement Cost
The price you quoted is a fair price and I don't think you caused any damage. Transmission and brake fluids are similar, the only difference is in the additives for protection under certain conditions. It'll be alright.
