Question:

Automatic Honda civic, 97 transmission?

I just bought a 97 civic, it‘s in awesome shape for the year, but after we bought it we noticed that the transmission shifts a little hard at times. We just brought it to the Honda today and had them change the transmission fluids, but I didn‘t have much cash on me, so I didn‘t dare have them check it out. I‘d like to have an idea of what it is.I‘ve read that it may be the filter for the transmission, however I was told today at Honda that they don‘t have a transmission filter. I‘ve also been told it could be a missing/loose mount for the transmission.Any idea what would cause this?

Hey listen to K R that is how breaks work no matter how you look at it , that is what stops your car and saves lives K R is right on, hope you understood all that he said.

Changing the fluid was a good start, but just one change isn't gonna get all the other crap fluid out. Change the fluid a total of 3 times with a couple days to a week between each change (depending on how much you drive), it should clear out all the crap fluid. Also make sure even if you have to stand over the mechanic, if you don't change it yourself, that the new fluid is ONLY Honda ATF, any other fluid and you run a high risk of destroying the transmission, Honda transmissions are very unique. Also have the transmission filter changed, IF I'm right (Someone correct me if I'm wrong), these models have an internal filter than can only be changed if the transmission is dropped and opened. That is the only way the filter can be properly taken care of, changing the fluid will not clear it out. Another thing to look for are any broken/weak mounts so don't skip those. If it doesn't get better, you may have to look into a new transmission or having it rebuilt. Also, to a certain degree, it is normal for the Auto Tranny's around that year to shift hard. It's just how they work, I know 2 other people with Hondas from your year and theirs shift a bit hard as well despite being well taken care of.
