Question:

Bike Disk Brakes tightening?

I have hayes disk brakes, and I have to pull the lever all the way in for them to lock out. How do I make it so the lever is nice and tight?

Answer:

180,000 miles is really good for that transmission. Be happy it lasted that long, and start saving your money.
on you brake lever theres a screw type thing where the wire goes in unscrew that to tighten the wire if that doesnt help without the screw soming out then you will have to cut the wire shorter and unles you know how i would recomend taking it to a bikeshop
Brakes are very important and if not properly set up, can kill. From your description it is impossible to suggest one cause, anything from cables rusted up to pads missing!! If you don't know how to service them, take it into your local bike shop and PAY to have it done by a professional.
For mechanical brakes you can either take up slack in the cable at the caliper or you can screw out the barrel adjuster and hope that works. For Hydraulic brakes you might need to have them bledair in the hose will most certainly cause the handle to pull all the way in to the handle bar. Either way if you dont know how to do it then you should take it to a shop and let them do it for you. Mechanical disc is not hard at all and you just might be able to do it yourself. Hydraulic needs to be done professionally although you can learn how to do it but you need the proper bleed kit and hydraulic oil for a hayes brake system!
