You would have to take to a fire protection company to have it checked and refilled. The cost of it would be more than just buying a new one at Lowes, home depot etc
I use a space heater in both of my boys rooms. Their rooms both take the brunt force of the western wind and it is very cold winter here. It's the only way I can keep their rooms toasty.
I use a small ceramic heater in my son's room. I actually have it set to 80 degrees because my son doesn't sleep with any blankets and like you we turn our heat down at night. I don't think you're being dangerous. I don't feel like I'm being dangerous. Our rooms are connecting and I have smoke detectors and such. My son loves his heater. His hands have a tendency to get really cold so even if we had him under blankets he would still need a heater.
