Answer:

I'mglad she isn't my veterinary nurse. Coral sand, do you mean dolomite? The only problem you are going to have is an increased PH. Crushed coral will slowly increase the PH level in your tank. If you are using distilled water this will bring up the PH. You can stir up the tank and do a water change, no more than 50% once a week or 2 25% once a week. Allow the filter to pull out what it can. Do not stir up the tank more than need be after that, it should settle and clear No need for emptying your tank, then you will have to start your Cycle all over again. and where would you put your fish? Your gravel syphone will only pull out so much which is ok if you are using it, don't stir the up the sand, let the GS do the work.
let tha filter do it,s job
if you do a water change from a hose pipe this water will not be the right temp etc for them. i would suggest putting the fish with some of the murky water they are in in a bucket and cleaning out the whole tank leaving it to stand so that it can reach the requirements they need. fresh cold water will shock the fish even more but the murky water to sit in for approx half a day will not halm them. still you may have to put some of this water back in so some of their own water moves with them, the clean water will over power this so the murkyness will not be present. i would not suggest leaving the filter to do its job this will take a while and if your seeing your fish gasping something needs to be done. difficult one i know but you dont want to inhabit them in worser water conditions being that thet should be in approx 26 degrees. good luck.
