The fog machine did not set off the alarm, you said the janitors pulled the alarm. It doesn't matter you are not going to have to pay an fines. The firemen are not going to set your house on fire and the police are not going to give you any problems. This was not a prank. I was a fireman for 35 years and we answered lots of malfunctioning alarms, it is part of the job.

Like the kid who spilled something on the carpet wanted a way to get it cleaned before parents came home. A troll answered by saying a a mix of ammonia bleach would make his problems go away. What if the kid had really tried that lethal combination?
It is unlikely that you or the school will be fined for this. This isn't a false alarm, this is defined as a good intent alarm. The janitors thought they saw smoke so they pulled the alarm, it's not the job of the janitors to investigate whether it's real smoke or not. The kid that pulled the fire alarm before probably did it with ill intent, i.e. to get out of an exam. Yes it costs alot to roll appartatus to a scene, but that's why people pay taxes or donate to their volunteer Fire Dept. so that when there is an emergency someone will show up. Just if there is a next time, make sure that school admin is aware of what is going on prior to using the fog machine.
