Theres a line between the two. Hard rock is something that distinguished adults in the 80's would frown upon, while heavy metal is something that would scare them or freak them out. Hard rock has guitar notes that are (usually) individually identifyable, while heavy metal has their notes slurred together. Heavy metal is for people that think everything can be usefull if they give enough reasons (smart or dumb) while rock is for people that believe in the cause of the band and coming from a humble upbringing AC/DC to Disturbed, awesome bands, obviously different Alice Cooper to Static X, both different but like the same ideas Scorpions to Queensryche, Both sentimental and blows minds just as well as each other
