You actually answered your own core question. You CAN lift a human off the ground with helium balloons. Mythbusters method did work. As you have seen, the larger the balloon, the more lifting capacity it has. Fewer balloons are needed with cluster ballooning, as you have seen. Mb used common helium filled party balloons, thus, so many more were needed to achieve the same goal.
