Wow, where do I start? The percentage of gays and lesbians have been exactly the same in every culture in every country since ancient times. It never goes up, it never goes down. Morality check, people! And to answer your question, I think the way gays hurt society the most is by driving up the price of real estate in affordable neighborhoods.
Depends on the kind it is. If it's a hard-wired one, forever. (The chirp signals the backup battery is low or the unit needs replacement.) If it's a stand-alone battery operated alarm, probably a month or even longer. Until the battery is completely dead.
