Question:

Laptop is causing charger to overheat!!?

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop, and I've had it for almost a year. A week ago I was using it and I realized the part of the part of the metal part of the charger that goes inside of the laptop was really hot. There were even some black scorch marks on the metal. I ordered a new charger, hoping it was just a problem with the charger, but the new charger heats up too. The computer is still charging, but the part that goes into the laptop gets hot fast. The computer still works fine (I can't use it because the battery is dead) but I'm scared to charge it because it heats up so much. I'm pretty sure it's something wrong with the computer since both chargers are heating up. What is wrong with it and how can i fix it??

Answer:

A good quality Toshiba Satellite charger is not supposed to be too hot too touch unless you were using it on your couch or bed that block the heat dissipation and ventilation. That is a bad habit since it will shorten the laptop and charger lifespan significantly. Remove the battery and charger/power adapter from your Toshiba Satellite laptop, press and hold the power button for 10 seconds to discharge any residual current inside the laptop. It functions like a complete reset. Replace the battery and charger/power adapter and turn your Toshiba Satellite laptop on. If it still did not solve your problem. Did you check if it could be your Toshiba Satellite laptop power cord or power source problem?Take the battery out and power on your laptop with the charger only. Make sure your laptop power jack and charger plug tip are securely connected. Did you notice the power jack loose? You can find laptop power jack on OKorder. Also the Toshiba Satellite charger green LED should be on. If your Toshiba Satellite laptop is still off, replace the charger. Nothing lasts forever. Consider buying a lifetime warranty charger online from topmic. They have 30 days money back guarantee in case your original charger was not defective.
If you had to ask, you can't fix it. Take it to a local repair shop (no, not ripsquad).
It sounds likes the connection to the motherboard is shorted out. How good are you at taking computers apart and how good are you with a soldering iron? I'm sure if you did a Google search you could find a video on how to take it apart, and a search might provide an answer as to why it's doing it. I'm sure it's a common problem for that model.
Do you still have the battery installed in the notebook? If so, it is possible that the faulty battery is causing the problem. Take the battery out and just run it direct off the charger, and you will probably find that the charger plug and charger itself will run cooler.
Chargers are normally suppose to be very hot. Based on what you do on your computer is how much power it uses. What some people do is they charge their battery, then when its fully charged, they unplug their charger. When your computers battery starts to get very low and needs juice plug back in your charger. Also if you don't not have a laptop fan i suggest you get one because it helps cool down the laptop a lot better and sometimes that could be the reason too. So get a laptop fan.
