Question:

Lifting children during pregnancy?

So, I am babysitting my 1-year-old cousin who is about 25-30 pounds and I have to lift him to put him in his high chair, crib, and the car seat. I am 18 weeks prego. Is it bad for me to be lifting him?

Answer:

I would say yes. I don't think you are suppose to lift anything over 25lbs. I know that I picked up my 4 1/2 year old son recently out of necessity for about 10 seconds and I was hurled over in pain afterwards. But he weighs 44 lbs. So that is kind of a bad example.
Unless you are experiencing problems in your pregnancy that would cause you to not be lifting etc. then no. I have a 21 month old and I am a stay at home mom. I am currently 18 months pregnant. I get tired and try to not lift him or carry him etc. However, we live in a 3 story town house and I find myself still having to carry him up to his crib if he is sleeping in the car etc. I also read in a couple of books that it is not a problem.
Talk to your doctor on any restrictions you may have. I want you to think about history a bit. many women have had kids and ran farms and worked in factories. This was there norm. They lifted and pushed and pulled 100 pounds. They had 5 to 12 kids and lifted each one. But again this was there norm not yours. Most docs and midwives say to stay with what you normally do with exercises also. A runner can run while pregnant but it would not be good for a women to take it up during pregnancy. I had 3 kids I had to pick them up during my other pregnacies. I was told never to lift anything over my head more then 15 pounds. But I still lifted my son in the air from time to time.(he like d to play airplane. So, whatever i tell you or anyother person tells you it is best to go with your doctor evaluations. Congrats hun
