my car will start up fine and as long as you push the gas its ok. but sometimes when its at stop lights it will start to sputter and shut off. I have had fuel filter and air filter changed also had o2 sensor changed the man that works on my car said that was it but still does it.i am a single mom does anyone have a clue what it might be?please don‘t tell me to take it to a mechanic .small town one in town cant afford to keep pay him to fix it all till he figures it out.thanks
I fairly have a 2001 Nissan altima with an identical suitable situation. Engine mild got here on and when I took it to get a diagnostic, they suggested 02 censor or catalyk converter or something like that. I did observe that impulsively my motor vehicle could shake mutually as idling. They suggested it wasn't severe when I had the 02 censor code. The code replaced when I went to get an oil substitute. The code suggested i mandatory to alter spark plug 4 using fact of a few misfire. I replaced all spark plugs and then all of sudden, when I quit at lighting fixtures furniture or the motor vehicle is idle, it shakes then shuts off. (sorry for the long tale) any way, I took my motor vehicle to the shop the former day and that they suggested it quite is the two the distributor cap, distributor or the gasket. you're able to take your motor vehicle to the shop. There must be a minimum of 10 issues inflicting your situation. My motor vehicle remains interior the shop, i'm waiting for the mechanic to call me to grant me the undesirable information :(
A vacuum leak will do that. Open the hood and lean in. If you hear a loud hissing sound, then you have a tube or a small hose leaking. Unfortunately there could be a fuel pump that is old and weak. For this there is a fuel pressure test. Unfortunately back to the mechanic for that. There should be a fitting under the hood where he could attach a fuel pressure test gauge.
We really need to know make, model, and year. No car is designed to do that (I sure wouldn't buy one that stalled by design!) so we are looking for a weakness, and each model and year has its own weaknesses. I agree the mechanic is in the dark about the cause - O2 sensors don't have enough influence on mixture to cause idle trouble. You don't mention a check engine light, which makes me suspect it is older than 1996 - the year the modern OBDII monitoring system became mandatory. If it 1996 or later the EGR system becomes the top suspect because it is one of the few systems that can have powerful effect on the idle quality without turning on the check engine light. Regardless of the year, cleaning out the throttle body is an easy do-it-yourself job that can only improve the idle. Carburetor cleaners in a spray can work well - auto parts people can explain anything the directions on the can leaves unsaid, and you probably have friends who have done it.
