Question:

My son has to build an instrument from things he has at home. Any ideas? (no guitars)?

it has to be made from things around the house, and has to have three pitches.

Answer:

This is why I get the longest, most inclusive factory warranty I can. As I recall, when I bought my used Toyota Sienna mini van, the longest Toyota factory warranty was 7 yrs. Woulda cost me about $1,500 for a bumper-to-bumper on a 3 yr old w/ 22k on it.
If you manually shift the transmission up or down you will not damage anything, but that pretty much defeats the purpose of having an automatic transmission, so if you want to manually shift gears you might as well get a manual transmission and your wife can either learn to drive it, walk, or stay home.

3 glass bottles with differing amounts of water in each, struck by a spoon or something would work. A little more complicated 3 tins, each one with balloons rubber stretched acoss the open top would provide 3 drums. Different size tins would give different pitches. Elastic bands stretched over a margarine tub, but that might be too close to guitars. 3 pieces of wood, fixed in a triangle shape. Elastic bands fixed across the triangle starting near one corner. and getting longer as you work towards the 3rd side. This would make a primitive harp, with the pitch getting lower as the strings got longer. Hope this helps.
