Question:

Should the control cables for a 1997 Mercury 90 hp work on a 2002 Mercury 40 hp outboard?

I just purchased a pontoon boat with a 1997, 90HP, 2 stroke Mercury/Tracker outboard with a bad powerhead, that I'll probably just part out.I've found a old fishing rig at a good price that has a running 2002, 40HP, 2 stroke Mercury/Tracker outboard that I am going to purchase mostly for the motor. Should the controls already on the pontoon boat work with the smaller motor? or will I have to change the controls out? I've only seen pictures of the 40HP, and they both have tilt/trim and the controls look real similiar only the one on my pontoon has quicksilver stamped on it and the other doesn't (if that makes a difference).

Answer:

Should be one in the same.
I do not thank so, You will be changing controls
it totally depends on how good of a mechanic you arei bet i could make it work.
try it see ,mercury has always had the quick silver name ,some years they use it some years the don't
Yes, your controls, electric, throttle/ shift and steering will work just fine. Mercury did not change the electric harness plug till 2006. The other option you have is to replace the powerhead on the 90 with a Mercury reman. See what the cost difference would be. Don't forget, you will need to reprop the 40 for the pontoon boat.
